Is it possible to use a Runtal Hot water radiator for a steam application, by closing the return side and tapping a vent? If not, why? It seems like it would work.

    It will not....

work. Biggest reason size. The tapping on a hot water rad and the interior will not be large enough for the steam to get in and get out w/o issues.

That being said.. Runtal does make steam rads... http://steamradiators.com/

    I called Runtal once

and asked them that very question..here is what they said..''well, it'll work for a LITTLE while''..I said what do you mean by that? they said the passages are to small and rust will eventually clog them up..hense it'll work for awhile then fail..

    a little while

But what does a little while mean? 6 months, 1 year, 10 years? I saw the steam rads but i really like the look of the white runtal radiators.  If it something that "would work" and last 10+ years that's ok with me.

    10 years

For most equipment that is a life time. I am guessing a little while is 6 months to 2 years. We some times need to sacrifice Form for function. That being said contact Joel over at Radical Radiator he has some wall hung rads with some what flush faces. As far as color he can make it what ever color you would like. Careful he has some beautiful radiators over there, you may want to change out more than you planned to.

RUNTAL RADIATORS ARE NOT FOR STEAM!!!!!!

Runtal radiators are "NOT DESIGNED FOR OPEN SYSTEMS". Runtal is for closed looped hot water systems ONLY. The reason you got a vague answer about how long they will last in a steam systems is because "THEY ARE NOT STEAM RADIATORS!" Think of it this way. How long would your car stay floating in the middle of a lake?  Probably for lest than a few minuets. Why? Because that’s not what your car is designed to do.

Runtal has a sister company that manufactures steam radiators and they are available in the same Runtal colors. www.steamradiators.com
