Radiator metering orifices

In the past our company has come across buildings that were designed with radiator metering orifices, found mechanical as builds and reinstalled properly sized orifices as required. Has anyone ever removed existing radiator traps, sized each radiator to the required metering orifice size and created a thermostatic trap free system? With the high cost of trap replacement/rebuilding, I was wondering if this would be a viable "one time" alternative.

PS- I understand this is not for every two pipe system. All of the systems we "returned" to metering orifices are running on low pressure steam with modulating vaporstats.
