Will closing off a room help?

Options
I'm trying to cut the cost of my gas bill. I wanted to close down a radiator in an unused bedroom upstairs. I closed the valve and the system made a lot more noise in the morning. Could I actually damage the system? I have since opened the valve and closed the Varivalve vent. The radiator still heats up (perhaps not as much?). What advice do you have for this situtation. Thanks

    You can't

damage the system, but you may damage your hearing... it's much more satisfactory with one pipe systems to close the vent than it is to close the valve, as valves very rarely really close tight, and any steam getting past the valve will condense, and the condensate will try to get out of the tiny opening as the steam is trying to get in.  Percussion section.

    Close the vent.
