Hothead

Just replaced 70 year old Am Std, oil fired, steam boiler with a new Weil McLain gas fired hi-eff steam boiler. Having daily problems with maintaining boiler water level and surging. Also new system has very heavy knocking upon start-up.

Upon adjustment to normal level the next time you check water level you will find it above sight glass.??

There appears to be too little water capacity in the system?? This is a manual fill system.Help

  • Excess Water

With the "surging" it sounds like you are producing wet steam and excess water is being carried into the system and is slow returning to the boiler. Surging is caused by contaminated water, have you skimmed the boiler?  You also need to check the wet return and make sure that is clear as blockage here could cause a slow water return.  It might  help if you post some pictures of the boiler and the piping connected to it as perhaps we can spot something there that is causing a problem and needs to be adjusted.
