Leking Oil Filters.

After many years of changing oil filters , we are running into a problem with a few filters that leak. Only to have one  that leaks is a problem enough. This is the filter that is changed on a service call that the element & gasket are changed. Not the spin on type. Most have been  minor but some have lost  a lot of oil. This problem has been around a long time but lately its getting more common. Its almost to the point that you are  not confident that filter is not going to leak after you completed the call.

    is there any bio in the fuel? Some gaskets won't hold up with bio..................

    Are the filter holders old?

    If the filter holder (the can or the top) is old, it may have suffered damage and be slightly bent or warped, so that the gasket is not enough to take up the slop. Of course, there could also be grit in the groove where the gasket goes, but I assume you checked for that.

    Those Leaking Filters

    The filters that are leaking most of them were problems with the can gasket. Not the two small gaskets that come with filter replacement. When we run across an old filter we replace the bottom half with a upgrade kit.  The larger replacement upgrade kit has problems with the bottom bolt. Its lose sometimes. Also there is a size difference with the upgrade kit bolt and the old bolt. Its seem that when the filter is replaced there is a problem with the gasket fitting properly. It could show up as  suction leak , or leak oil on a gravity fed tank. We don't use the Bio fuel yet. I wonder if there is a gasket material change by the manufacturer.

    JD nailed it.  Most likely warped canister bowls.  I replace them all the time, though in most cases no need to replace the cast iron top.
