Radiator in basement/ heat from condensate return.

It was the Webster system in the building just right of the BIG building, the one I took the tank out and put in a hartford loop and a main vent.

Getting the water to go the right way in the high return (downhill) made a world of quiet in that building.

  • Steam radiator in basement/piped on dry return

Is it feasible or permissable to pipe a cast iron radiator in the upper left tapping off a dry return line in a basement(above boiler water level), than exit the radiator on the lower tapping (now a wet return),than pipe back to the Hartford loop and gain heat from the dry return steam/condensate and the hot wet-return water flowing through the radiator. Is this possible to attain?
  • maybe

You don't want it within the "A" or "B" dimension in the piping, because it will fill with water as pressure climbs.

Today's boilers can't afford to lose a radiator-ful of water and still make steam.

They used to put them flat on the ceiling on steam systems, pretty often.

  • I've seen it done

It works best if you have all the condensate from the building going thru the rad.

P.S. Noel- I remember that rad- was that on one of the Milvacos?

    radiator below steam main

installed one exactly as you describe in 1972 . works well when heat is on. but since thermostat is on upper floors baseboard loop is the best solution if real comfort is desired. separate zone
