but to get the maximum benefit from a "flame-retention" (current high-efficiency design) burner, one would have to install suitable baffles inside the boiler. This has to be done just so, and requires a pro with the know-how to do it right.
One of my "Dead Men's Books", which was written in the coal-to-oil conversion era, says this type of boiler would probably not show better than 40% efficiency on oil with the burners then available. A flame-retention burner might get this up to 45%, but you'd still be sending a lot of heat up the chimney. Don't confuse this with the combustion efficiency results that the oil tech leaves after the annual service, these show just the burner's efficiency, not the boiler's.
The bottom line is, a new boiler could cut your oil consumption in half. It would pay for itself quickly.

I want to replace my old sinclair oil burner on my old boiler
Hi, I have a very old boiler that is still heating my home amazingly well, except at an astronomical cost. Last season, with plastic on most of my windows, I burned 1350.8 gallons. I'm sure that was down from previous years because I was broke and sacrificed a couple of degrees on the thermostat as well as troubling myself with the plastic. I keep all my vents clean and all the radiators heat up (some more than others, but they all heat up). This boiler is a 1911 Richardson steam boiler (snowman type) and my house is large-- 2500 sq feet.
I don't want to replace the boiler right now, it's covered in asbestos and I'm just not up for it financially or otherwise. What I would like to do instead is 1) replace the burner with a better one; 2) clean my wet return; and 3) put the main vents back in place.
The burner on there now is very old-- it's a Sinclair model H200-1, maybe from the 50's or earlier. It says 60-2 00 gph or 60-2.00 gph (stamped on so I can't make it out that well). What I'd like to know is how to properly size the burner for this boiler, since I can't be sure that the Sinclair was properly sized. I think there must be calculations to figure out what the best modern burner would be-- I want the right size nozzle for the job. Anybody got any advice on this?0
