Steam Fumes

Be Advised,

The combustion chamber material in the gas boilers used to have a "Corn Starch" binder that smoked and gave off a stench during startup.

Non-Toxic, yet as you said "acrid", will bring tears to your
eyes, yes? If that is the case then it's probably the "Corn Starch" binder, it will go away.

This is or is being change by most manufacturers, new processes and such, that said you may have got a boiler that was "hanging out" at the distributor hence still the
old process.

Our new steamer did the same thing last summer, we were
advised of this by the installer, it was also covered in
the mfg's I & O manual, check yours under the "startup"
section.

I'm suprised that the other folks involved didn't bring this up.

I am sharing my own experience, if you are not comfortable
with this continue to follow through till you get an answer
from the parties involved, or call some else that handles
that brand boiler.

    Re: Steam Fumes

Since a new boiler was recently installed, noxious fumes have permeated my home. I have carbon monoxide detectors and they have not gone off. It's hard to describe the odor, but it's acrid, like a burning chemical (definitely not organic). Four different plumbers have been unable to identify or treat the problem. The boiler has been flushed and skimmed. Plumbers have suggested that I flush the radiators, replace old piping, or treat with tri-sodium phosphate, but no one will say with certainty that the fumes will go away if I do any of those things. The boiler manufacturer simply insists that it's not the boiler. I am concerned about the health of my family, and any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
