    Does anyone know of a ratio of waste oil I can mix w/fuel oil to cut the cost. And what modifications, if any, needed?

    Kevin is 100% correct.

    NO waste oil should EVER be mixed with heating fuel and used in a fuel oil burning furnace or boiler.

    If it is for a commercial application, there are waste oil furnaces and boilers that are specifically designed for that use. They are a different technology than conventional heating oil appliances.

    I do not know of any waste oil heating units that are LISTED for use in a residential environment.

    aka motor oil, is a very, very messy fuel to burn. It needs to be filtered, warmed and generally a burner with compressed air to atomize the fuel.

    As there is a lot of crap in used motor oil, it ends up in the atomosphere. cadimum, lead, etc.. lots of nasty stuff.

    I see a bill in Ontario to ban all waste oil burners due to toxic emissions. Although the bill is sponsored by Safety Kleen and their "fleet" of lobbists :)

    Clean Burn a waste oil system has in their literature that waste oil units should not be the primary source of heat. The reason is waste oil is crap and has certain negative effects which mean more service issues. Granted they save one money and waste oil doesn't end up illegally dumped but it takes a little work. So, given this it should never be burned in a unit not rated for it.
