the accent never goes away.
My father an American citizen and Vietnam vet still has the thickess Trini accent after 40 plus years in this country. Sometimes,I don't follow what he's saying.
My wife, 25 years here and college educated here in the U.S still says word like joga (yoga) and potato ships (chips) I try to correct, but she gets upset at me.
What is sad is the young kids today, from all backgrounds speaking the worse english (american) ever.
p.s. I just seen 'Crash" on dvd, the best "best picture" I've seen in a long time.
The oscars ,finally got it right. Relevant to this topic in someways.

Right on Clammy (Christian, a bit deep as always) I would never dream of correcting my wife's diction, or pronunciation. Although her English after 20 years+ here from Spain is better by far than many of the folks I run into who were born and raised. The beautiful lilt of her voice is music to my ears. I try to treat anyone who let's me into their home with respect, and consideration; and have always been treated in kind. Although I can get a beer, some food, and a room in a several languages, the first, and sometimes only, words I learn are please and thank you. It never fails. Common language is overrated. Common decency will never go out of style.0
