below the waterline is the only place that some will recogmend using copper all steam carrying pipes should be black Iron.If you have cast Iron fittings sometimes its easier to crack the fittings with two sledge hammers and then take them off and replace the fittings and pipe.

Steam Boiler Pipe Replacement
On my old steam Boiler I have a steam leak on the header. I tried to take apart a 1&1/2 union, after heating it up with a torch and beating a pipe wrench with a hammer I was able to get it apart. The problem is I can't get the rest of the pipes a part. I'm concerned that if I continue to use a pipe wrench and hammer I'm going to damage something. It seems impossible to take it apart using 2 pipe wrenches. Some of the pipes on the return are not in good shape. I was wondering if it is possible to replace all the pipes with copper. I was told that I can't use copper below the water line.0 -
Cut the pipe & crush the treads
Bruce, Someone said I could cut the pipe above the tread and crush the treads as I try to turn the pipe out of the fitting.0 -
That is another trick you can try first

you might want to patch it & wait for the spring because if not i got a feeling you will not have heat for a few days. or call a plumber.0
