Find the violations

the orange bucket, but where is the red tag?

Wow, that is really disappointing. I like the 2 brick support for the gas line. Of course the venting looks like a "killer" too.

    Find the violations

Below I've attached a series of pictures of a installation. I'd be interested to see (if any) code violation(s) exist.

The installation shots show both a water heater as well as a steam boiler.

    I've heard this before

"But, Al, your price is way higher than ANY of my other bids."

Do you know why my price is higher than those other so-called "installers/plumbers/handymen/friends -in-the-business"?

Because I do not do work like that. That is appalling, and gives the whole trade a bad name.

AND, on that note, some of the WORST installs are the ones done by "friends-in-the-business" and "guys-on-the-side". These people are usually working after work, with limited materials (or perhaps materials "borrowed" from the day job), and are not being fairly compensated, so they tend to take shortcuts. But, that is just my opinion, made after seeing countless jobs done this way.

It's bad but we have all seen a lot worse.

Heat resistant wire tys are ok for hanging pipe????????????
    smoke pipe put togeather backwards
hang a pipe from a pipe with hanger strap
no vacuum breaker on the hot water tank (required in MA)
air vent on steam return to close to water line
no extension pipe on boiler relief valve
    numerous wiring violations
black/ galv??? pipe on city water make-up
    Combustion air?????/

There are days when I would like to see one this good.

    Talk about CRAP.

But.......ALLLLLLLL. These guys were CHEAPER THAN YOU!!!!

Some people would rather wake up dead. Don't they know that for a few dollars more they could be alive and comfortable.

What is the cost benefit if the price to fix the abomination exceeds the proper install cost times five?

Where does the payoff for efficiency begin? Please tell me. I have yet, in my lifetime, either found a way, or found, something for nothing. Even late-night TV has yet to grasp that, not all of us are THAT gullible.

There is a cost associated with proper and safe heating.

Low bidder is never the choice for those in it for the long run.

    code violations

Here is the "story". I went to a friends house socially (daughter's play-date)and the friend asked if I knew anything about heating. The friend claims their "brand new" boiler keeps shutting off. After repeated visits by the installing company, they determined they had a problem with the chimney (TFE, Spill switch was tripping) so the friend called in a chimney company. After the chimney people were done and charged what IMHO was an outrageous amount the TFE kept tripping. The boiler installation company told my friend that if they wanted heat they would have to keep reseting the spill switch.

To Al Corelli, you could come and fix this (A little too far from you though) but I doubt you would have been high bidder. In keeping with forum "rules" about discussing price, lets just say you would have made a bunch and still had extra to buy us all a beer.

To marc friedman, (I couldn't tell if you were kidding) yes, I've seen a few residential installations.

To EBEBRATT, so far you got at least 5. This install is in Jersey, and without looking at my book the vacuum breaker requirement is typically inforced for domestic water heating equipment that is "above" the point of use. This water heater is in a basement, but good eye!

To Larry (from OSHA), "I think" the orange bucket was to stand on so the installer could remove the screws holding the gas pipe and install those "hanger extender" (yellow tie-raps), Oh, the bricks, I think they were an "added" safety (I know you like safety) in case the tie-raps broke. There is no RED sticker because, yep, you guessed it, there was no permit.

For all you EDR guys, I've since did a "quick" EDR of the home and came up with 290 sq. ft. of steam. I believe the installed is at 446.

    Anyone else?

    I resent that

    I hope you're being sarcastic.

I know I've seen some pretty scary commercial stuff, too.

It looks like the local plumber, heater, washer, painter, window, welder guy's do-it-all handiwork. (No offense intended for any of the above trades)

    I beg to differ...........

Price has nothing to do with this. Most terrible hack jobs I see were done for a very high price, much more than I would get to do it right. Seems to run hand in hand.

If you Guys think that looks bad, you better not come around here! :) That would be average. I do like the day-glo tie straps.

Water heater vent, lack of and/or wrong grade.
Boiler relief valve installed wrong, stem must be vertical.
Clean out on chimney? Do you need to insulate outside chimney? Mixing galv with alum on venting.

Copper supply to header is bad workmanship.
Most of the wiring won't pass.
