Water level in furnace

I have a forced hot water heating system. When I press the water valve to add water to the furnace (sometimes referred to as the boiler) the water gauge level dutifully rises. However, within a few minutes it declines. Every few minutes there is a sound that erupts from somewhere in the system, which sounds like a valve is opening and/or closing.

I do not see any leaking water in the vicinity of the furnace.

Perhaps related to the above, when I set my thermostat to e.g. 65 degrees, it only reaches a temperature several degrees lower than what I set it at.

Can anyone diagnose my problem and suggest a simple, do-it-yourself solution, before I contact a plumbing/heating expert on Tuesday or Wednesday?

In addition, who would you recommend for repairing this problem if you don't have the wisdom to solve it on your own?

Sol, a furnace and a boiler are two different systems all together. You are referring to a steam boiler. Go to "Find a pro" on the top left of this page and find someone to take care of your problem for you. With all due respect, a simple fix for someone that doesn't know the difference between the two could be more than just a small problem.
