Missing Main Vent

My wife and I recently moved into a 75 year old house with single pipe steam heat.
So I got "We Got Steam Heat" because I was curious, love all old things, and to learn about the system.
I now know that I do not have a main vent. Is this something that can be easily installed during the heating season? Or do I have to deal with the hissing chorus till spring?

Look for
a professional in your area; someone who is familiar with steam heating and he should be able to install one for you during the heating season.

what if you do not have the clearance above your mains?
Can you drill and tap into the side of that pipe and bring it up??0 -
Sure, look at Steamhead's thread here:
http://forums.invision.net/Thread.cfm?CFApp=2&Thread_ID=29563&mc=53
He had threaded taps welded onto the pipes to get sufficient venting.0 -
when using those #2 vents
can you come off the side with 1/8" pipe and then work up to 1/2" pipe?0 -
Gill and Pajek haven't flow tested open 1/8" pipe yet, but it is doubtful you could vent more than a Gorton No. 1 through it. You would need at least a 3/8" tap.
Order Gill and Pajek's Ebook online on this site. Only $10 and it goes to charity. Dan emails you the book in a pdf format.0 -
Thanks
for the info guys, I'm sure that I'll have more questions down the road as I learn more about my system.0
