Main Vents

My 1 pipe steam system does not have any main vents.
According to my steam book there should be vents at the end of each main 15 inches from the end and at least 8 inches up. There is not enough room between the pipes and the ceiling (in the basement) to put vents on the mains. Could I put main vents on the pipe where it comes out of the floor above the basement beside a rad instead?

You can usually get by
with less height above the main if the system is in good shape. Some vents like the Gorton #2 come with their own "risers" built in.
