steam boiler

We were called out to fix a steam boiler that a company put in a year ago. The boiler short cycles every 30 seconds, dosen't matter what the diff. is set for. The system has a vapor stat, which is confusing to us as to why it is on this system. Why wouldn't there be a pressure stat? and can it be converted to a pressure stat?

a vaporstat is a great thing to have as the system was likely designed for "ounces of steam pressure" in the first place. A "pressuretrol-controller" will not allow such a low adjustment. Start adding "pounds" of steam pressure to this system and your troubles will be just beginning! (not to mention the rise in fuel cost to the HO).

    Jeff, the short-cycling

is not the Vaporstat's fault. I bet either the boiler is oversized or the air vents are inadequate. Dig deeper and you'll find the problem.

Here's a wild guess (from a homeowner, even).

If the boiler has an automatic vent damper, check the vent safety switch... on my new boiler, the leads were loose, and the boiler would fire for 30 seconds or so before noticing it couldn't read the vent temperature, then shut off.

Dumb, but it took us a while to figure that out.. we were all thinking it was shutting on pressure or something similar.
