    Banging in pipes

Last October, I converted from oil to gas, had a new gas boiler put in and from day 1 have had terrible banging in the pipes. We have steam radiators and the house is about 80-90 years old.
The banging continued all winter. The contractor redid the pipes over the boiler(the pipes he had installed) and that made it worse. He changed the return lines near the boiler figuring they must be clogged and that had no effect.
With about a week left to the heating season, he lowered the pressure and although it was warm that week, I heard no banging at all for the first time.Thought it was corrected.
The heat is now on for this year and the regular banging is back. This is horrible!Any ideas?

John; Do you have any pics you could post of the boiler? Is this a 1-pipe steam system?

John, you need a steam man

obviously the original installer doesn't know steam. Try the Find a Professional page of this site.

    banging in pipes

I have had the same problem since converting myself last winter. I have been told that if the amount of BTU's your new boiler puts out are too high, it may cause banging. Lower the pressure on the boiler. Another reason may be water in the pipes or radiators. Slip a shim under the legs of your radiator and tilt it towards the valve. Also, you may want to empty your boiler of al the water and refill it to make sure you have the right amount in it. All these things seemed to work for me. You may also want to get a boiler cleaner, costs about 20 bucks. Just pour it in and let it do its job.

I don't have any pictures. It will take some time to get them, if at all, since I am not computerate literate and will have to find out how to do it.
    thanks

Thanks for your suggestions. The plumber did lower the pressure with two weeks back to last year's heating season and there was no banging but itwas also warm. This year it started banging right from the get go and it is only 45-60 degrees out here in North Jersey.
  • why the plumber?

Why did you use a plumber instead of a steam heating pro? There's a differnce between them two... I for one, both of them... Knowily what pipes can do differntly for differnt systems...

I don't know what it is set at. I will have to ask the plumber. All I know is that he said he lowered the pressure. Thanks
