The quick answer is yes...and I hope you have a CO detector too. The longer answer is it could also be caused by an unstable flame, possibly because of an oil line blockage.

Either way he should have know it and fixed it or recomended that you hire a chimney sweep.

    My furnace has been producing a strong noxious odor when it runs. I thought it just needed to be cleaned so I had it done. It has been three days since it was cleaned and it is still producing this exhaust type smell. Could the chimney itself need to be cleaned?

    Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in the room with the boiler? I hope so.....did the service technician do a combustion/draft test after servicing the unit? And leave a copy of the results?
