zone valves....rjbphd

to Honeywell. If you install them on the return and pump away the banging is not an issue...kpc

  • zone valves .... ur choices?

Hello fellows wallies, may ur coming weekend be good and I need to pick ur brain.... I'm in a middle of heating job that required 5 zones and I usually use Taco zone valves ... Supply house guy say WR zone valves are better... But I have bitter memoirs with WR valve with all the wiring confusion... So I asked for Erie valve, ..etc.. So, with ur background, which ones u prefer? Thanks for the inputs....

    Zone Valves

Very timely question. Currently how many models of WR valves are there? Too many! Yes they have a 1.25" valve, but by far the Honeywell are easier to service and repair. WR valves are throw aways. Any rememner to add valves before and after each zone valve with WR so that you can change them without draining the system. HW took care of that problem years ago.
Wiring is an issue yes. WR has how many configurations within their own product set? Its easier to just do a HW. The others, Erie, Taco etc are less popular in my area.
    Good luck

    Which ones?

Honeywell & TACO - in that order, and once past three ZV's, lose the TACO option.

B&G, W/R, Erie, Edwards and all the euro-makers (T/A, etc): All throw-aways IMO

Caleffi valves are worth a look for either thermal or motorized valves.

    3 zones

    Ken,
I'm just curious....Why "Lose the Taco option" after 3 zones?
I think, though maybe I'm no expert, that we've been doing lots of zones for lots of years. ??

  • I am a taco guy with all my heating products, from zone valves, to circulators, PRVs, Pressure differential bypasses, Heat exchangers, etc. great products, easy to work with, wire, and repair, (not that they ever hardly need fixing). I like the ESP which are now being replaced with the EBV, which is basically the same thing. easy to wire, great for radiant heat as well as any other hydronic heat.

    J W,

It minor, I know; but, once you exceed 3 TACO ZV's, you need a greater than 49 VAC tranbsformer. The 40VA transformer is a "commodity" and costs 20 bucks - tops. Once you go over 3 TACO ZV's, a "special," pricey transformer is required. Adding exponentially to costs. It's a constant "****" about TACO ZVs. More than 3, ya need a pricey transformer.

Rumor has it they switched from high-amp "motors" (to open and close each ZV) and I am unsure as to the details of such changes. The old method was excellent engineering and very durable. Who knows about the "new" ones, if it even proved out yet in the field... It very well might, but I just don't know. So, over three, go Honeywell. Under three, either is fine.

    My thoughts....

For residential only,.POWER OPEN SPRING CLOSE. Why do you men want to make your day longer and harder? HW, Erie, W/R 2 wire zone valve's are OK take your pick. If your have a closing problem with you Zone valve, Your pump is grossly over sized for you res. system.

T-formers are cheap,.... Couple 2 40 va if you want more work for yourself.

You actually have 3 choices with Honeywell Zone valves...

You can use the basic V8043 series, the SparcoTrak MZV rack & pinion drive valves or the new 5000 series with the quick-change top, slow closing action & silent motor. A 5000 series valve would have a number like V8043E5012 for a 3/4 sweat 4 wire, end switch, 24 volt. Up to 4 V8043 series and up to 8 MZV's can be used with a 40 va transformer.
  • thank you to all

Thanks to all for responing.... The winner is.... Taco. Tried and proven thru my experinces, did want to try other brands but supply limited with products and no way with white rodgers zv....
