First...do any of Dan's books deal with the finer points of figuring head, or circ selecting? I would like to study this area more.
Second...What is the proper pressure for an original gravity system, and what is the correct gravity exp tank fill procedure? (basement tank)

if you have a gravity system...
then the exp. tank is in the attic...not the basement. If you want it in the basement then you have to add a circ. to the system...kpc

I have seen a few conv gravity systems with the giant orig tank in the basement. Was this tank installed when it was converted?

Yes
originally they were in the attic or top floor closet and open to the atmosphere, the only pressure was from the colum of water up to the tank, if you over filled it, it would overflow onto the roof.0 -
I am famaliar with attic tanks, but was unsure if the basement tank was only added when the system was converted to forced HW. They are always on the ceiling. Also, if the system is a gravity, what is the proper working (cold) pressure...or is it filled until the attic tank runneth over?

It is filled
untill the attic tank is about 1/3 full, and that is system pressure cold, euther the fill was in the attic at the tank or in basement and you filled by feet(altitude) now you know why iots called an altitude gauge and has feet on it. And yes the basement tanks were added at coversion.0
