1st steamer of the season ( Ron Jr. )

We were going to pipe in the 2nd tapping , but ....... the factory installed plug would not budge . And I don't believe the jacket is cut out for that tapping . I think it'll be fine with the drop and the increase to 3 inch for the boiler main .

Comments

  • I can't believe

it's almost 1/2 way through October and this is our first steam replacement . Harder to believe it was a gas boiler . The 2nd pic shows the steps down . We had to angle the handtruck down to avoid getting hung up on the waste line .

    Looking good

another drop in Keyspan's revenue (or whatever they're calling themselves now).

I know of an even older Royal steamer here in Baltimore, but that one won't be replaced until the Mega-Steam comes out.

    Looks Good Ron

Maybe Dan should write a new book. It could be called "The Almost Lost Art of Steam Heat". Nice work, as always.

    Don`t you just love

    Factory installed inaccesible plugs?

    I know I do NOT!
  • 24 steamers this season already ?

Wow , when does your season start for those 24 ? Your crews are at a breakneck pace Al . Is your work oil or gas , or a combo of both ?

Thank you Al for the complimnent !
  • It was a Royal ?

I forgot to look for the brand name . I really think this will drop the fuel bills a good percentage . We were steaming in about 5 minutes - I always forget how much faster gas boilers produce steam compared to their oil counterparts . Thanks alot Steamhead .
  • I mentioned

tracking the bill to the homeowners . They are related to someone who works in our office , so it shouldn't be a problem .

Yeah it wasn't bad for a Friday - got done at a resonable time . We lucked out cause there was a 5 zone MPO going in too , but a co-installer broke his pinky a few days ago and another down boiler came in . I might be doing that MPO Monday .

    Thank you Chris .
  • And Peerless

with a flat plug in the skim tapping . Sometimes it comes out , sometimes it don't .

Forgot about this - there is no specified skim tapping on this boiler . We piped in a tee where the relief valve goes and tried a skimming through there .

    Thanks Mark and Kevin .
  • The stairs were hairy

And the was a very tight left turn at the top landing . The handtruck had to be held almost totally straight to go down the 1st step . Whoever is on the bottom of the handtruck in this situation needs nerves of steel and real good upper body strength .

    Thanks Jamie .
  • Well ......

after seeing your 2 latest steamers , I got jealous . I was going to try your trademark soda bottle trick but I didn't have my fave - IBC root beer . And it looks too much like a beer bottle :)

    Thanks alot David .
  • Factory installed

Even if we didn't want to pipe in the 2nd riser , I like having the option of using that plugged tapping if it'll line up with the system piping better .

    Yup

a Royal Red-Glo, made by Hart & Crouse. From the outside it looks like the usual 3-pass coal boiler.

A good oil boiler will steam as fast as a gas one. I'm curious to see how fast the Mega-Steam produces steam.

    Thanks alot lchmb .
  • Darin

Nice lookin job, but what's with that bucket? Some guys just got no fashion sense.
  • Hey Scott

    I promise if I get famous I won't forget about you , buddy :)

Didn't someone talk about pitching a boilerman reality show ? It would be hilarious . Closeup shot of me dropping pennies down Kenny's crack . Kenny slicing open my cup of coffee so it dribbles down my shirt . Replacing Tony's tools in his tool box with speedy dry and rocks . Everyone walking out of the shop with clothes pins stuck to their backs .

More of a blooper and practicla joke show , huh ?

    Thanks alot Scott .
  • Hahaha

That's funny . It was the homeowner's bucket that we screwed up . We were using it to skim the boiler . We threw it out , it had cracks down to the bottom .

    Thanks Jerry .

    Plugs

Nice looking job as usual, Ron. You and your crew obviously show pride in your work. I didn't know you worked on gas.

We too have had the same issues with the factory installed flush plugs - and I have the busted knuckles to prove it! To top it off, they use a **** size inverted plug - a 1" drive is too small and a 1-1/4" drive is too big. My guys fabricated/welded a tool out of scrap steel and angle to remove the plug.

The solution is simple - either use a square head plug instead of the flush plug or just leave it out. I have taken this up the ladder at Burnham but my suggestions have fallen on deaf ears. -DF

    Very nice....

As usual, this install is a joy to behold. I really like the drop header, along with the massive header up there. The steam should be extra dry and happy.

Other nice touches include that double 45° fitting on the gas line so that the handle is easy to use, the pipe lines up both with the boiler and the gas supply in the ceiling.

    Top notch.
