Trying to figure out my next move

I have a Weil-McLain model G-7 boiler. It has worked great for the 8 yrs. I have lived in this house. I know the boiler is at least 40 years old.

Two days ago the heat kicked on and all was good. Yesterday, no heat. What type of troubleshooting can I do with this to determine the problem?

I'm wondering if it is even worth a service call. Should I just get a quote for a new boiler. Would I ultimately save in the long run because it would be more efficient?

So many questions. Any help would be appreciated.

    40 yrs old

I would suggest a new boiler, the savings would be worth it, Boilers have come a long way since that boiler was made.

get a few quotes , try finda pro from this site

    I'm with Dave

That boiler has done all it can and it should be replaced.

    I assume that you checked...

the pilot... wasn't just the thermocouple... I hope.
Anyway, that puppy is in dire need of replacement... do the math...that is maybe 65% and a new Ultra could well be running in the high 90's most of the time...you could have a beatiful little kitten purring away down there instead a fire breathing dragon....

    Retire it

That old beauty certainly owes you nothing, let it rest in peace. No matter what type of new boiler you have installed, obvious savings will be recognized. I also notice you have a gas fired water heater, it would certainly be wise to change that to an Indirect hot water heater that runs off the new boiler, they are much more efficient. The payback would be in a very short period of time and depending on what state you live in, many offer some really good rebates for installation of Energy Star boilers and Indirect water heaters.

    Just my 2 cents

    Two things to look at

The short term - and the long term.

From a short term perspective: This is heating system and you do need heat. It is worth a service call to see if the problem is something simple to fix. You could have heat back for anywhere from $60 - $200 if it's something simple.

From a long term perspective - even if the boiler is quickly and cheaply repaired... would be to replace the boiler.

Done properly a replacement hot water boiler can save you significant fuel cost. Done wrong and it won't.

That is why it will probably pay to take some time selecting an installation contractor and perhaps even which kind of boiler.

Their is tons of information on this site - check out the Q&A's for starters.

My best advice is that if you live in a larger metropolitan area is to find a professional - which means being able to sort out who they are (and someone calling themselves professional may not be). A true professional will ensure that you know the options and what can be done.

One other comment. Boilers are not cheap, and installing boilers is not cheap. Expect to pay $$$$, and even $$$$$ for some top of the line systems. But done right they save you lots of money long term - and keep on saving $ long after they are paid off.

    Fix now

I agree with Perry.Fix the boiler now but start looking for a replacement. That way you will have time to do your homework and get proper quotes. That way a contractor won't be rushed and do a proper job of the installation.

    Good Luck
