Painting of radiators

We recently moved into a 100+ year old home and the steam heat radiators are more than likely original to the home. All of them have numerous coats of paint on them. Is this a problem? If so, how do we fix them?
Also, how do we remove a radiator that is no longer needed?
Thanks in advance!

Under tech topics or library there is a great article on rad paint. Sandblast them first. The color and paint type does matter.
What type of steam heat do you have?

Removing a radiator
I believe the best technique (using one hand only) is to carefully manipulate your mouse to go to the top left corner & click on Find a Professional. How do you know you don't need that rad?0
