Condensate lines
Man with a question
Member Posts: 69
I have always used 1/2" pvc on Vitodens installations for the condesate line. My understanding is that the condensate is acidic in nature and would eventually eat through copper.
Is this true? Is the condensate on mod/con boilers really that acidic?
I've got a mechanical room where "nobody" ("nobody" is the only person who has taken responsibility) has twice broken a joint on a condensate drain.
Thought I'd refer this one to the council of elders.
Thanks,
Happy Jake

pH of the condensate
is between 3 and 4. It will eat iron, normal carbon steel and copper. Run it in PVC, ABS or CPVC to a chip tank or neutralizer and be done with it.
And elder my butt, I just turned 49!0 -
PVC is fine...
Perhaps a fernco fitting may alter the potential for thermal expansion/contraction: which may in fact be the breakage "culprit"?
The rate of exp and contractaction with PVC is actually huge!
Copper will also work, but as suggested, copper does poorly even in mildly acidic stuff. Better hangers? Fernco? Rubber maybe?
