First Ultra Install - Whadya Think?

Boston
Boston Member Posts: 71
We read the book and tried to pay attention. My P&H guy is doing a nice neat job.

Comments are welcome. I hope it all looks ok. We still need to tie in the water and a few other loose ends.

We are now trying to figure out the controls.
We are running 2 air handlers and 6 zones of radiant using constant circ. I am working with the electrician on how to call for heat with the ultra. We are used to having 180 at the boiler and mixing it down.

    Nice

First, I am a plumber and do not do heating. (Except some commercial steam piping) But from a mechanical standpoint, it looks very neat, clean and well thought out.The piping is well supported and I like the cover on the boiler during install.

You can see the "care" for the job.

    Good luck,

    Jim

    Nice neat install.

You are going to want a 0011 or equiv. on the DHW tank.

Why didn't you use a primary loop?

    Looks good....

You will need a bigger circ. for the DHW or the boiler will not work right... 0011..... Also if you hookup those other two zones you will have water whippin through that 1" header, my handy HH mouse pad says 8 GPM max. for 1".....
I wouldn't have hard piped the gas.... goes back to noise issuses that I have had in the past...flex connectors isolate the gas valve noises....(harmonics at some flows).

  • nice work

You will need a bigger pump for the indirect and i would have tried to put your closely spaced tees closer you may have some ghost flow issues.

I'd like to see a valve where the domestic water connects. Isolation of the PRV is not just smart, its also the code.

Its begining to look real good though. Nice and neat!

There is a valve there, however it is doubling as a wire/hose reel.

The tlc needed for an aluminum heat exchanger

You might want to read about the care of an aluminum heat exchanger with regard to cleaning and treating the system.
pH is critical in this system. Also if you are adding glycol it must be aluminum rated.

The new issue of PHC News has my newest article on the different care these boilers demand to maintain efficiency and to protect them from the water chemistry.

    You guys are amazing

There it is right in the install guide, the 007 is not listed as the recomended pumps. Floyd was kind enough to email me the specifics about why a bigger pump is required.

Now I have to figure out how to bring it up without pissing anyone off.

    Any ideas?

    Install guide....

It isn't just sent along to pass the time while your on the throne.... :-)
If your P&H guy is worth his salt, he should be willing to learn from it.

    loop

There is a primary loop, but like Mike said, it would work better if the tees were closely spaced.

I did see the valve before the pressure reducing valve. Another valve is required after the PRV.

If you look at the 2003 International Mechanical Code:

    Section 1205 VALVES;

    Sub-Section 1205.1.4 Pressure-reducing valves.
Shutoff valves shall be installed on both sides of a pressure-reducing valve.

    Stellar workmanship

I wonder why the Webstone iso purge flanges are on the bottom of the circs? If they were on top the zone could be purged by flowing backwards. A nice way to clean debris and air before the fluid sees the circs.

    Yeah

That puzzled me, too. Why even have them if they're not in the right spot ?
