Radiant Heat

I was on a service call. It was Hydronic heat system with 4 zones. When I turned on zone one. The pipes by the terminal unit started making a ratling noise. I figured either the pipes were not secure or their was air in the system. I secured the pipes. And bleed that zone and ended up with the same problem. Do you guys have any suggestions on this problem.

    could be air or

something stuck in the circulator impeller causing an imbalance?

Could the system not having an automatic air vent be a problem

I could change the impeler without removing the circulator and getting water all over the place.

Would placing the circulators on the return create a negative pressure.

might be a hassel with a zone valve....

if it is leaking and say it was a WR and had stripped the gear may be taking on air and the grinding noise is probabl the stem on the valve grinding away at the aluminium open closed selector.... that is a could be...

depending on the type of circ pump.... you may have no fluid in it and it could be causing the same general bad sound....if it is a Grundfoss take a dime and unscrew the cover of the pump shaft untill it leaks water if it doesnt leak some water....give it a palm heel strike:)

or turn the screw out completly and turn the power off then push a screw driver into the pump and physically push it in... the thing is ,some times the things need a bit of in and out movement and all they are getting is the run around...:)and Lubrication is very very important :)

The system doesnt have zone valves. Each zone has it own circulator.

The pump is moving water through that zone. The supply and return pipes in that zone are hot. The baseboard units are also giving off heat. The ratling noise is coming from the baseboard unit itself

Check your flow valve....might be going south for the winter.
or air in it causing the seat to jump up and down.
    Makes a H-ll of a racket.

The flow valve is the valve connected to feed valve. How would I determine if that valve is bad.

If this device is going, it would create noise by the terminal unit( base board)

BigB, the flow valve is usually on the supply (old systems b-4 pumping away) it looks like a red or green casting with three ports with one of them plugged. It has a knob of some type on top that opens the float/seat. it is in essence a check valve. Also, check the circulator, if it has a built in check valve, then you probably won't have a flow valve, I have seen certain
internal checks go bad as well. but usually you get heat when you don't want it. (ghost flow or gravity flow) not much noise.

    Thank You

I would to thank everyone who took time out to put in a little imput.

I finally fixed the problem. I went back to the house. I found that someone installed a brand new flow check valve in that supply. But they didnt remove the old one. After I cut out the old one and resoldered those pipes. The system worked fine without any noise.
