Header size

on how much steam the boiler can produce. On a smaller boiler, 2-inch might be OK. But a larger one will certainly benefit from a larger header.

Get the piping diagram for the boiler in question and see what it says.

    Header size

With two 2 in. tappings from the boiler, I figured I would need a 3 in. header, but when I look at drop headers in the library, I think I see several that look like the risers from the boiler and the header are all 2 inch. Would there be any significant advantage to using 3 in. instead of 2 in. for the header?

    I would use a 3-inch

Keep in mind that anything you can do to reduce initial steam velocity reaps benefits every time it runs. You install it once, pay for it once and it is done.

A larger header allows the excess condensate to drop off and has room for the steam to gather on the way out. As always, use an eccentric reducer or dropped elbow when you drop to your equalizer.

Thanks Brad, I expected that was the case, but after seeing several 2 in. header photos, I was just wondering if I should save some bucks. I volunteered to repipe the boiler of a neighbor who had no vents in his mains and his near boiler piping was a mess. More than I planned to get involved in, but I'm going to see it through anyway.
