    Southern Steam follow up

    Steamhead.

It's Neal - the guy from the south.

I have a couple more questions. I put the Gorton #1's on 2 of the lines that I can get to. I may be able to get to the 3rd "branch" in the future. That sure has helped. I also skimmed the boiler with the TSP as recommended by WM. The only thing I have not done is re-pipe around the boiler itself.

The good news is that the hammering is GONE! Aside from the skimming I also was able to "fine tune" the auto-filler so that it would not fill the boiler to the tippy top of the sight glass. Now it only fills it about half way up the sight glass, when it comes on - hardly ever. I think there was to much water in the boiler and it was throwing it into the pipes. I can re-create the problem by putting more water in to the top of the sight glass. So I wonder if the skimming helped much?

My question is that the water is still very very dirty. It appears to be rust(?), as it settles out after sitting for several hours. Also the water boils normally on a stove and no "film" is on the water after it has settled. See pictures of before and after settling - before is cloudy, after is clear with a layer of grime on the bottom.

Any suggestions on how to get this dirt issue cleaned up, or do I even need to bother - are the new pipes just "curing."

    Thanks,

    NEAL

Well, it's better than it was

but it should be cleaner than that. The dirt is likely coming out of the system, you'll just have to keep after it till it's gone.
