I use them all the time and love it. They make round as well ad square style dampers for zoning. We installed this system in an animal hospital and on 1 system which covers the ER, they keep the room at 63* during surgery. There are a lot of considerations when considering any forced air zone system, but It is a great way to have separate areas at different temps.

i was wondering how do you put a 2nd zone onto a one zone house. it is a gas forced warm air system. is it a control or a damper or something completely different??

    Zoning forced air

When you try to zone a forced air system you really begin to see the advantages of hydronic heating. It's usually much simpler to do. But that's another topic........

Zoning a forced air system rquires you to provide a separate duct for each area you want to zone. Usually this rwquires the duct system to be set up for this in the first place but most times, it can be done after the fact also. The question becomes how much of your house will you have to rip out in order to get the right ducts going to the right rooms.

Typically, a zoned F/A system uses dampers placed in the main (the square) ducts. Each zone will have its own thermostat and damper. All the dampers are normally open until one zone calls for heat, at which point the non-calling dampers close. How complicated/expensive this gets is totally dependent on your particular system and house layout.

    Arzel Zoning

Check out Arzel Zoning on the web. They have a really nice system that is easily adapted to existing duct systems. Really nice product with excellent warranties.
