new boiler Utica

Have you developed leaks in the system that caused the boiler to constantly feed make-up water? This is a big problem that is very bad for the boiler right at the water line.

Im in the process of installing a new steam boiler. the plumber is coming tommorrow for an estimate. He wanted to install a new yorker but i explained that my utica boiler installed now is set low on my chimney. So he was thinking of installing another utica. My question is with the new yorker i was saving money, is the utica much more expensive? or is there another brand anyone can recommend that is good and not too expensive for low chimnies?

    oil or gas

the draft hood on gas units usually is the problem.

    The Utica steamer

is actually taller, but doesn't require a top mounted draft hood. Crown, Burnham, Weil, Dunkirk, Peerless has these side mounted draft hoods on their models. Maybe you can get a good price on one of those models.

the utica im removing now has a leak above water level. Its going on 23 years old. Shouldnt they last a bit longer? THats why im hesitant about a utica again. All my radiators heat fine but i cannot raise pressure anymore? Am i using more gas right now?

i noticed every year it was needing more and more feed water. I learned fresh water corrodes the boiler. THats why im replacing rather than attempting to get a repair.
my plumber came yesterday and saw the chimney was low. he recommends i get a weil mclain, he claims they are shorter. i need a 150000 btu boiler. specs on the website show its 33 to 34 inches high.

  • Is there space to break into the chimney higher up and seal the lower opening with some bricks and mortar?
