Quality work deserves quality prices

Quality work comes at a higher price, for one basic reason.

Quality is the result of getting it right the first time and exceeding your promises. I have worked in competitive environments all of my life. I learned long ago not to try and match the schlock outfits. I have no qualms about charging a fair price for results that "Work".

Delivering what you promise, on time and working is cheaper in the long run. Look at all of the screwed up jobs that are posted on this site every week. I have to believe that the total cost of doing this work twice is more expensive than doing it right the first time.

In another life time I owned a printing company. A contractor came in one day and stated to me that he knew I was expensive, but he was told that we did qualtiy work. I looked him right in the eye and told him he was right, but we kept our promises.

As Joe Montana, of 49er fame, proved during his playing days; the proof of the work is getting the job done.

Tiger Woods does the same in golf.

In both cases the results are from hard work and study. Many folks have talent. But, the top work is done by those that are not easily satisfied. They Strive to do it better and do it right. Cutting corners is not part of their thinking.

Just some food for thought on this spring like day down here in Missoui.

    Plumbing Printer

Ah, another former printer are you?

See what's happened to the printing business? An uneducated customer base bought personal computers and copy machines. Never having been taught the fine art of printing, they fell that any garbage they can muster up on Microsoft Word and run off on the Xerox is just as good as the engraved wedding invitations I stole money for them for.

I'm finding that our trade is now quite similar. In this Long Island market, the public is not educated in quality work and I compete daily with Russian and Pakastini illegals who run flex copper, unvented PVC and hose through their walls.

This is the new American consumer. As the public becomes more stupid, the tradesmen suffer.

    I ran into this too

However, I was able to gain via the referral route and a city wide reputation for doing quality work. Also, I was dealing with other business owners primarily.

Since their printing represented their firm, maybe they were a little more concerned with quality.

I am sure the market has changed since my time in the printing business. The internet has made many businesses
less profitable and much more competitive. Printing can be done anywhere and shipped. Fortunately this isn't true of the hydronics industry.

After reading the horror stories on this site of folks spending good money on poor systems via the internet, I would belive that those that visit this site would be very careful how they got the work done.

Also, many contractors on this site do almost all of their new work via referrals. At least that is what I have been told by many of them.
