Banging noises and incorrect thermostat temperature reading

I recently purchased a 3 story 3 family house. I renovated the first floor this summer and the GC relocated the riser in the bathroom about a foot or two by elbowing it out of the way. There was water leekage from the ceiling where the joins are. The GC cut open the celing slightly. In the morning and periodically through out the day, I hear banging noise from the bathroom. It is loudest in the morning when the temperature is going from 66 degrees to 72 degrees. How can I tell that the riser is pitched correctly? Visually it looks like the pipe going up is higher than the horizantal pipe of the elbow. There is also noise coming the radiators. Is all this noise problem related to pitching or could it be something else. Attached is picture of the pipe.

    the horizontal run

is clearly pitched incorrectly. The pipe that is connected to the radiator valve is probably a bit too long, forcing the wrong pitch. Pitch that thing back towards the riser coming up the wall! You will most likely have to use a shorter nipple on the line that extends from the radiator valve into the floor.

And another thing. Get some insulation on that pipe. It makes a difference.

These things will keep the nearby piping and radiator from getting waterlogged, especially on a cold start (like your return from temperature setback).

thanks a bunch for the reply. is it possible to fix the pitch without involving the second floor apartment?

The only way I can see

requires a visit to the upstairs apartment. I know this can be a pain. Especially if they have the place guarded with angry pit bulls, fire breathing dragons and an electric fence. Although some tenants can be more difficult than these.

fortunately no fire breathing dragons but there may be a protective mother hen in there. would it requires tearing up the upstairs floor? the upstairs riser is exposed in the bathroom.

Ty, the hope is that the pipe just below the radiator valve is too long. You could try shimming up the rad to lift the pipe also.

If I remember correctly, there is no radiator attached to that riser. I think it's just the riser going to all 3 floor to heat the bathroom. Does that make sense?
Either way, it looks like I need a professional. Any idea what range this might run? Thanks.
