propane fired boiler

I live in rural Georgia - midway between Columbus and Macon. I have a wood fired outside boiler and am still instaling piping for under floor heating in an 1858 home.

This will be our third season of use (very mixed results so far with about 60% of the piping in place). I have noticed in addition to the cost of wood going up, that the wood itself is becoming heavier and heavier as I enter seniordom.

My thought was to instal a propane boiler that would serve as the prime source when we are away on extended trips and the only source when the wood finally gets the best of me.

I have checked with the local heating and air firms and gas suppliers. No help yet in locating such a boiler (I have an out building that can shield the boiler from the weather located very near the existing wood boiler). I would envision a series of valves to place a boiler on the line or to take it off the line.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Some wall hung boilers

like BAXI Luna are available in propane fired versions. Many have low lemp sensors to run if freezing conditions might freeze up the unit and the circulator. Some models are specifically vailable for outdoor mounting. Takagi also makes some instant tankless water heaters that are approved for radiant. They offer an outdoor rain cap for the vent so the unit could be mounted directly on the outside of the building.

    Second boiler

Sounds like your installing radiant heating under a old wood floor? You want to make sure horse hair or tar paper was not used under the the floor . Sure would smell funky in the chill of winter ...

Twin boilers ......I would pipe them in "primary secondary loop "system.

    Automatic

I hate to sound like a tekmar rep, because I'm not....but add a tekmar 363 control and it will automatically switch from wood to the gas fired boiler when needed. I think it's page 16 in the data brochure.
