vapor steam

Noel, Thank you for your input last week. We have done the following since then:

1- removed check in the upper part of the main vent. This seemed to eliminate the sucking problem we had when we drained down the boiler.

2- we cycled the boiler & everything seems to work o.k.

We are going back to add the vaporstat & clean the drips at the end of the mains. We clean all of the returns near & aound the boiler, and replaced the check valves.

I guess when it gets cold we will know more.

Can this system be converted to a (2) pipe steam system by changing the radiator vavles to modern ones, installing radiator vents & installing F&T traps at the end of each
steam header? And of course repiping the near boiler piping?

  • Yes and no

Radiator vents are for one pipe steam.

Other than that, understand that vapor systems are actually refined two-pipe systems, to begin with.

Doing what you suggest would be a step backwards, and might cost more to run than the vapor system.

You have the best there is already.
