Radiant Heat- Sleepers or 3/4\" Plywood Overlay?
Big Idahoan

We have been doing quite a few radiant jobs that involved hardwood floor coverings recently. Until now we have always done a gypcrete overpour with sleepers to fasten the hardwood to. The contractor on our current project wants to put 3/4" plywood down over the overpour. Does anybody have any experience with this type of application. This is a new one for us. We would sure appreciate any info we could get on this.

Bollinger Method
custom hardwoods are often set over 2 sheets of ply, which rests on the gyp or concrete radiant slab. It's called the "Bollinger Method", and the actual technique can be found on the internet or at Oak Floors of Greenbank.
If the tubing needs to be installed at less than 12" centers, sleepers become more costly to install. There's some striping effect by the wood sleepers separating the gyp. The RPA has an excellent flooring guide at www.rpa-info.org
