Simplex gun-type burner

the other day i was doing an overhaul on an apartment house oil burner --there was an old coal boiler that was convrted to oil that had been abandoned it has a Simplex oil burner on -i think size 10 E --it looks like a 50 caliber machine gun--forced air from the bottom a rotating cup at the end of the''barrel''looked to be a manual oil pilot--a valve to control flow of oil going to a tube that is parrel to the main burner --had to be lit with a long stick or some apparatus --im going to be taking this burner out next week --anyone ever seen 1 or heard of them --Simplex oil burner made by Bunton Iron Works Berkley California i want to clean it up and use it at barbeques just need some info on it

    Sounds like a true rotary burner.

    I believe Ray out of SF bought them out.

    We still service them. Rotary cup burners are very simple and use a form of atomization that is very interesting.

    I suspect they are still made although have no idea who makes them anymore. Perhaps Ray or Superior? 200HP and up with # 4 or 6 is typically the venue.

    actually i found out that they were bought out by Preffered ----i still work on some of the old Preffered,and Ray rotaries--some people just wont let go -i have a whole school system that has mostly Preffered rotaries only a handfull of the Ray's actually i work for the regional rep for Ray burner

    Oh yeah!

    I still have a few Preferred Utilities rotaries as well.

    Love tweaking those puppies in. We found "sharpening" the slinger cup rim/ring with crocus cloth and getting a razor edge can really make them sing and dance on the atomization factor. Just don't put your tongue on the edge when spinning (:-o)
