repairing radiators

I have two radiators that froze and burst. They match each other and the sections are held together by thread rod. I removed the broken end section from one and replaced it with the good end section from the other. I used a liberal amount of pipe dope on the cylindrical pieces that fit into the radiator sections and banged the sections together and tightened the thread rod but I still have slow leaks. Is there some sort of special sealant used on radiators? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
