Looking for the best 'young' techs too

Okay, a lot of you already know about my search for the ‘oldest service tech.’ I think many readers will be surprised when they learn the age of the oldest tech. There is still two weeks to go before I end my search but if it ended today I bet most of you would be amazed. That is all I’ll say until the story comes out. There is still time for people to nominate themselves – look for info at www.achrnews and click on 'survey says...'

Having said that, I am also looking for the brightest and best young service techs (25 years of age and younger). My idea is to pair some of the oldest techs with the youngest techs and ask for their perspectives on the HVAC trade, then and now. Do you know a bright young service tech who would be a good source for this article? If you do, send me back an e-mail with a stunning description of him or her, one that will convince me that this service tech should be one of the few who becomes a part of this story. I’ll pick the top 3-5 people based on what you tell me. The best will have a combination of excellent educational skills, mechanical skills, people skills, and who want to make HVAC their career choice. So please think of some convincing verbiage. I’d like to have your ‘nominations’ by March 21st.

    Young Tech

John, we have a good one at our shop. Ryan developed an interest in the trades during his last few years in high school. He was in a program called the "student built house". It's a project done locally every year where several local high schools combine their industrial arts students and actually "hands on" construct a new house. They are the generals as well as the construction crews. It was started by a construction program at a local community college. These houses are immensly popular with the community and there's usually a waiting list to buy them! The students get to work side by side with every trade from start to finish of the home and many of these kids wind up going on to the trades.

Ryan developed a strong interest in the HVAC portion of the build and he wanted to learn more. At the suggestion of his Dad, a member of the Tinners Local, he contacted the UA Local apprenticeship center while still in his senior year of high school. He's quite a personable kid and they took a liking to him right off. They gave him a tour of the school, loaned him a few refrigeration books, and even let him sit in on a few of the classes and labs. They also helped him get into a regional HVAC competetion. Closer to his graduation he job shadowed with me for a day in my service truck. We did a few service calls as well as some PM's. He seemed to really enjoy himself. As soon as Ryan graduated From high school he applied to the apprenticeship and got onto the list. As soon as his number came up for the program our shop took him in. He's in his second year with us at 19 years old and doing fantastic. He shows up on time, has a positive attitude, absorbs new information like a sponge, studies hard in his school work, and is great with the customers. He has to work with all of our service people in a variety of situations and does a great job with them all. I have no doubt that he's going to become an outstanding service tech, probably long before he turns out of the program.

Please feel free to contact me if you want any additional information. Thanks, Rich L
