Cast iron radiators piped using a manifold.

Just wondering if anyone has used a radiant manifold with cast iron radiators?

I don't see any problems piping it this way, however there maybe something i'm over looking.

I coudn't convince the owner into radaint panels.
they want to keep the same look through out the house which has ci rads.

What I have is a two story addition with a very tight crawl space and not alot of room for running two new main loops with scoop tee's and so on. So i thought about using a wirsbo manifold with reverse return.

    Any sugestion or thoughts appreciated

    Excellent application.

I might consider Pex-Al-Pex as an option (something about three layers and a more stringent O2 barrier that I find comforting. Couplings, bushings and done. Also known as a homerun system. You can put remote heads on the valves for TRV-like control.

If you do all of the connections in the basement, the upfeeds can stay (if they have exposed iron piping under layers of lead paint that is so tres chic in some circles).

No sweat -literally. You will not set the house on fire except with your brilliance in the eyes of the homeowners.

Shouldn't be any problem. Would however suggest a dedicated circulator for the manifold--most certainly if this is a converted gravity system. Your manifold and associated piping will have MUCH more head loss than gravity piping and you probably wouldn't get adequate flow through the manifold without a dedicated circulator.

As with any manifold system (even when reverse return) do sizing your branch piping nicely for both flow and length of run.

TRVs are always a great addition to standing radiators. If you're using them EVERYWHERE--not just the new manifold section--you most likely won't need that additional dedicated circulator.

    Hay...

Does Pex-Al-Pex come in two inch for steam?

Probably hard to keep the sags out of it.

    ... just kidding.

    just finished one

Just finished one this morning used 1/2 hepex and a small copper manifold with shut offs and a grunfos 3 speed brute .Used some old 5 tube cast rads that where originally used for steam cleaned them out and piped them from one side using a dip tube on the inlet into about 1/2 the rad worked like a charm and made the job look alot neater with the loops running down only one side of the rad instead of both .I will tell you it was quite fast using the pex over copper if done in copper i would have been there at least 4 to 5 more hours and would have spent more on pipe ,fittings and running all the loops .This new little addition to the system was only to heat the basement but i did add a taco sr503 exp and tied it into the 8124 triple aquastat there are still using atankless coil but i got them looking at a indirect .Peace and good luck clammy
