it's nice your trying to help us out and all. i'm sure your intentions are good but it comes off as demeaning. as you can see from my post here, i don't capitalize the first letter in any of my sentences nor is my grammar 100% correct. you may think i don't know any better but i do. i don't think anyone who posts here thinks any less of me because my punctuation isn't correct.
as for homeowners who post here with questions, i think they are more concerned with getting the correct technical help to their problem rather than an incorrect answer that has perfect punctuation.
case in point. we used to handle all the service work at 2 swarovski crystal factories. the top guy at the factory, who was a swarovski cousin, always asked for one particular tech. every time there was a problem because he knew the tech. was a crackerjack with the equipment. we worked at swarovski for 15 yrs. the entire time we worked there, and to this day, my tech. still refers to the factory as zoowarski and still can't spell it correctly.
i can understand your point if you are meeting a contractor for the first time and they look like they crawled out of a dumpster and every third word is a curse work. in a case like this, first impressions make all the difference and you probably wouldn't hire the person. on this forum, if someone had poor grammar but answers any technical question you have and shows the depth of their knowledge, when you hire them to work at your residence, you wouldn't think twice if they were a little rough around the edges because you know they have the experience to solve your problem. i'm sure everyone on this site has had someone either work for them or do work for them that was "a little rough around the edges" but kept them on because they did great work.
remember, don't judge a book by it's cover.

This encapsulates the lubricity of the English language,as

taught to me , personally ,by the universal mind meld .*~/:)

Lets see if i can make this a little clearer, the English language is rather slick :)

    When I was growing up...

...one of my favorite characters was Jethro Bodine. He had an 8th grade education and was proud of it. Be proud of what you do. It's okay to want to improve one's self, but that should be an individual decision. Heck, nobody tells me I should try and be a better writer -- I KNOW it. You got to have a lot of humility and a thick skin to be a journalist.

I'd ask any of these Wallies to fix my heating system in a heartbeat, regardless of whether they use spellcheck or not.

    Despite the harsh stupidity

We will throw out Job Applications if they are not filled out neatly, correctly or accurately. Pete is insane with an axe to grind. There is some accuracy to some of the things he rambles on about. You are judged on appearance and your command of the english language. You have one shot most of the time. You should make it count right?

funny thing is when i use to look for a job i would skip the application because i wanted to talk to the boss face to face.

i know that if i offer him to try me out for free and he See's how confident and straight forward of a guy i am

i get the job because he has nothing to loose.
works for me every-time and i don't waste my time or his hoping.

now i see why it's good idea i do it this way instead of waiting for my application to be thrown out.

i don't give the boss a reason to keep looking i'm just what he wants. ;-) and i keep being persistent till i get what i want.

i know i could call up company's right now and get jobs left right and center.

    thanks

    Wetheads vs. Motorheads

Motorheads vs. wetheads in a spelling bee.

The Wall at www.Heatinghelp.com is one of the sites I visit every day as is the forum at www.bobistheoilguy.com. I wouldn't think a bunch of gearheads could give wetheads a run for the money in the spelling department, but the motorheads win hands down.

I have read many of the postings about how you guys are all craving some sort of 'respect' for your trade and I have to say that good spelling and grammar would go a long way towards changing the perception of the trade. What's a homeowner to think when he reads, or should I say, attempts to read some of the stuff posted here?

I'm sure a lot of you guys totally understand exactly what Weezbo is trying to write and I have tried to understand his special style of 'writing' too, but after a while I just started skipping anything he wrote because it didn't make any sense. I'm not picking on Weezbo here, but if you want your posts to be read and understood, please be clear.

This is a forum to communicate right? Just try a little harder, it will make a difference.

Typing under the influence. Don't drink and type, you might offend Burt. Burt won't post his e-maill address .

The wall is many things to many people. I could not even use a computer or type a single sentence when I first got here. Please don't criticize people who at least had the courage to ask a question or tried to help some one with an answer.

Many people from the wall have become very good friends and I could care less if they misspell a word or two or forget a comma or leave a dangling particaple [sp].

Working class , blue collar cellar dwellers. Most of us in the trades have not gone to college , do not have a degree, but have very good mechanical skills.

A 500 word post with no paragraphs is hard to read, apost will all CAPITAL letters is hard to read. A couple of misspelled words , oh well, typo's happen!

Weezbo is from Alaska, cut him some slack. Sometimes I understand exactly what he is saying.

Don't take this too seriously, we don't.

    I didn't know...

it was my birthday. Thanks for the gift, anyway.

Pete, if you're going to call 'most of us' out, you should at least make sure your own post doesn't contradict your message.

BTW, with regards to punctuation, you forgot a period at the end of your second sentence.

Posts are not proposals. It is likely that most people are more careful with a proposal than they are with a posting on a message board.

    Have you considered that, Pete?

Those of you that like lower case sentences are in pretty

good company. ee cummings a famour poet and fred allen of radio fame both did the same. Allen when asked about it said it saved him time when he was writing letters. ee did it probably to just be different.

ee's poems were great and fred allen's letters were hysterical.

So the moral to this story is there are few things under the sun that have not been tried before. And in many cases, done much better and with style.

    Balance...

There is a balance to Canasta vs. almost everyone else.
Canasta has a valid point; without attention to the three R's, you will get taken advantage of in the business world.
However, he is much too abrasive in getting the message across.
For whatever it's worth, I have a 4 year college degree and read and write very well. Spelling bee champ when I was young. WHICH MEANS NOTHING when I am seeking advice from others on this forum. MEANS NOTHING in an evening no heat call. MEANS NOTHING if I make a mistake in bidding a large job.
I implore the Wallies not to spell check. Save it for the business correspondence. I will be very disappointed if Weezbo ever changed his style. Spellcheck will help improve spelling if mental notes are taken when proofreading, though. And all the best to ME.

    Some of the folks

who look in on this board will never prepare a proposal. That does not diminish their worth to our trade(s). Some of them, because of their perceived inferiority, may not ask the questions to which they need an answer.

They are like the shy guy in the back of the class room. They may be soaking up everything the instructor is saying. But they never raise their hand. If we place impediments like Spell Check, or proper English in their way, what have they, or we gained?

As long as the discourse remains civil, to heck w/ the spelling.

    Don't forget

most spell check programmes are in American English. Where I need Canadian English. You know, neighbour, labour, chesterfield.....

Actually, I used the spell check last night on a proposal, and the word FRIDGE, was not in the dictionary! I almost fell off my chesterfield laughing!

    Spellcheck or not to spellcheck

I try to pay attention to grammar and spelling, and I DO write the proposals (as well as contracts, advertisments, and other documents). I am very sensitive to the grammar and spelling that I use - but spellcheck does give me one problem. MS Word likes to correct my misspellings, sometimes without telling me that I spelled something wrong! It auto corrects words that I commonly misspell, and I don't learn anything from that now, do I? I can usually get to the meat of the posts without a dictionary and I'm glad I have a place to express my thoughts.

Guys, keep posting - do the best you're able to do whether it be Weezbolish, OR ALL CAPS, or even all smalls.

Recieved, receipt, efficency, performed, occours - these are but a very few of my common errors.

Enjoy life - do your best - sweat the small stuff, but only when it matters!

I once incorrectly spelled "proofreader" on a resume'. I think my secretary is still chuckling over that one.

There is a check-off box for that....

Its called auto correct, and it bugs me for the same reason.

Go to Tools, AutoCorrect and check off the automation you don't want.
