If your boiler is that old in all likelyhood you have a maintaning aquastat which at one time was in use for domestic hat water production if you still get your hot water from your boiler no worry if not i myself would not remove it or operate the boiler without it ,that is probalby the only reason the boiler is still alive now is it was always kept warm and probalbly never had any start up flue condensation .It has been my experence that just about ever boiler that i 've come in contact with that's still going and 50 to 100 years old always seemed to have a maintain aquastat and most of all the old one i have replaced had the coil abanded and the maintaning aquastat un wired they never seem to last to long after that i think that was the only thing keeping alot of older boiler in good graces is they never go completly cold just my thoughts peace and good luck clammy

Old Boiler Running Too Much, Why???

My old steam boiler, which has been converted from coal seems to be running too much. I have 2,400 sq foot house with 9 radiators, and 1 pipe system. The boiler seems to fire and burn for about 3-5 minutes then shuts off. The return pipe does not get hot. No pressure build up and mercury switch not being activated for shut off. Do you think the boiler needs cleaning, skimming or what? The thermostate is a honeywell.
