radiant insulation over subfloor
I AM REMODELING A HOME WITH ELECTRIC BASEBOARD THAT I AM PLANNING TO ABANDON, I WANT TO LAY TUBING OVER THE EXISTING WOOD SUBFLOOR AND FUR WITH SLEEPERS AND TOP WITH 1/4" CONCRETE BACKING BOARD. MY PROBLEM IS I DONT WANT TO DEMO ALL THE CEILINGS IN THE LOWER LEVELS TO INSTALL INSULATION IN THE JOIST BAYS, WILL A REFLECTIVE SHEET INSULATING PRODUCT OR REFLECTIVE PLATES SUFFICE TO OFFSET DOWNWARD HEAT LOSS0 -
Reflective insulation needs an air gap to work properly.
The aluminum tracks provide no insulation at all.
What will your final flooring material be? If it is something very conductive like tile and the floor below is heated, you might get by with no added insulation.0 -
THE BASEMENT IS CONCRETE, WHICH I WAS CONSIDERING FOR A BASEBOARD ZONE, THE UPPER (2) LEVELS WILL BE A MIX OF CARPTET & CERAMIC TILE.0 -
Without substantial insulation below the tubing, the carpeted areas won't work properly. The ceramic tile areas will probably work but still not as well as if they were insulated under the floor.0
