erratic radiator

MY HOME HAS A HOT WATER HEATING SYSTEM (GAS BOILER WITH CIRCULATING PUMP). ONE OF THE UPPER FLOOR RADIATORS HEATS ERRATICALLY. BELIEVE PROBLEM IS WITH FAULTY ANGLE STOP VALVE AT RADIATOR INLET - VALVE STEM SPINS AND CANNOT PROPERLY OPEN OR CLOSE VALVE. WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN TO CHANGE VALVE, I.E, REQUIREMENTS FOR DRAINING, FILLING, VENTING, ETC.

Joe,
The hardest part is getting the thing apart without breaking anything. Always use two wrenches -- one to hold the pipe and one to turn the fitting. And good luck. Have a Plan B in case you break the pipe or cause leaks downstream. It's a serious consideration. You open a can of worms when you start "horsing" old stuff.
Otherwise, you've got to drain the system below the level of the valve, and then when you fill it again you'll have to blead, blead and blead again all the radiators. You'll be taking air out of the thing for months.
Try to get an American made valve. The Chinese ones are a waste of time and will give you problems. That means forget Home Depot and those places.
