Unusual X-Tank Configuration

That was a case of "new helper showing us how he pumps a house down".

"Um, I forgot to open the drain, I guess."

I guess he guessed correctly. Good thing we weren't reusing it. We had a great laugh with that one.

    Bulging tank syndrome

Sorry guys. Couldn't resist another pic... New cam and all. Was installing gas cutoffs to replace the leaking water valves on the fuel lines. Boiler pressure was good so didn't look up till I was about to leave. Almost missed seeing this and made me curious about a couple things:

How much pressure required to convert the tank end from an
innee to an outee?(the other end is still an innee)

Would this be most likely to happen all at once and wake up all the neighbors or more slowly like blowing up a steel balloon?

Finally, how deep a vacuum required to "suck it back in?"

    Happy New Year to all

Saw similar on a run-away boiler system (old "auto/manual" gas valve malfunction and stuck in "manual" position) and homeowner had removed the T&P because "it started leaking".

He told me pressure gauge was pegged when he shut down the gas supply and drained water via a garden hose! Blind wife had called him home when she started hearing terrible noises. Old tridicator gauge from a gravity system so it didn't go too high to begin with.

    Don't use too much vacuum!

It could wind up looking like this.

do you have the water heater explosion \"mini reels'?

    they were particularily informative.

I got to think in Al's case 'Yah...That Cant be good.'

Larry, might be a better deal just to remove it and the temptation that lashing your new vaccum pump up, to something , might be giving you :)

    Hey Al

Now that is COOL! Like Mr. Holohan says mother nature hates a vacuum!

    I know your joking???

You replace it, not try to fix something that's broke.

    water heater clips

I think I may have seen those. Seems like they set the things in a field and let em overheat with everything plugged up and filmed the failure? Yikes.

    The \"cupping technique\"...

In acupuncture there's a technique that uses a vacuum drawn by the combustion process.Essentialy, one puts rubbing alcohol on some cotton ball put a small cup on the point hold it at a tilt throw some fire to the cotton ball and throw the cotton ball under the cup and then slam that onto the skin. the burn eats the O in the equation and puts the octopus grip to the skin...

maybe that would be a good way to shrink it down outta there :)

    30# according to the tag

Sorry got lost over the weekend. Pressure was good at operating temp. This was an old Crane boiler connected to three zones of baseboard. Whatever the cause I suspect was corrected some time back.

    Well yes and no

Seriously I am curious as to the amount of pressure the system was exposed to in order to punch out the end of the tank.

    Gotta tell ya

I was pumping a system down a few years back with a Teel pump and the exp. tank collapsed. Literally collapsed on itself.

Some of those old steel tanks were very flimsy.
