I wanted to bump this thread to bookmark it and post a question to hotrod.
Where would I search for information from OSHA and EPA on storage tank placement for isolation and containment from a spill?
This will be my first waste oil job that will heat a 13,000 autobody shop. I have 2 injection mixing temps and 1 zone of snowmelt via a HX.
Regards,
PR

4 mini tube injection
A 30 gallon compression tank with some additional connections added serves as a buffer and a mixing point.
Grundfos MixiMiser VS circs send the temperature to 4 remote manifolds.
Missing two MixiMiser yet, but the system is up and running smoothly.

Nice work!
Are the Clean - Burns cast iron? I like the buffer/blend tank scheme...were you able to play with that setup on the Hydronic Design Studio? I have an Omni Econo Heat to install next month, so I just might have to swipe a few ideas

Thanks Nick
Clean Burns are steel coil boilers. Basically a large loop of 1-1/4" tubing with a ball of fire inside. not very high tech, but fairly easy to clean out, which is a huge plus when burning waste oils. They really ash up! I'm finding cleanouts needed at around 750 hours, not the 1000 the manual suggest.
I learn more about these on every install. Post purge is critical! If you don't run the boiler circ for a period after the burner goes out they will overheat and trip the high limits. The ash and refractories hold a lot of heat.
If you don't have a place to post pure SOMEWHERE, this can be a problem.
On this install I left the buffer tank uninsulated on purpose to shed some heat after the burner goes out and the circ does it's factory provided 10 minute post purge. Also mounted up high to prevent someone from touching it.
On another installation I had to wire the boiler circ conctant circ to prevent that overheating issue.
Siggy helped me with the VS injection detail. I had done a bulge fitting dual cast gas fired boiler a few years back. But with these low mass boilers I needed some buffer-ability.
Be glad to help you if you need more info. I don't have experience with any other waste oil boiler brands. But I do have 9 Clean Burn installs under my belt.
Ease of cleaning is critical, if you or the owners plan on doing this. In my case I sub the annual clean and burner service to the Clean Burn distributor in my area. He has 4 full time service guys with all the tools and parts.
They remove the burners and run cleaner through them yearly, then replace all the o rings etc. The heaters in the burners really carmelizes the oil and this is an important part of the cleaning.
Waste oil burning isn't exactly "free"

Thanks for the info HR, excellent points. This waste burner will be a first for me and the owner who appreciates custom work. I think he is ready for the cleaning chores and maintenance but we will see. I do know the vendor recommends the waste oil tank be indoors and warm for best results. I may take up your generous offer of help on this one...!

In my area
the building dept and the fire marshall need to sign off on the design.
The info and spec we all used was from NFPA 54 handbook.
I found a builder of tanks in Mike's backyard of Cape Giradeau, Missouri. They built to ASME and UL standards.
I used double wall tanks instead of containment pits. Too messy and space consuming. Also double walled tanks can be located inside the building up to a certain size.
