insulation on boiler pipes?

Hi Audrey,

Generally, only the steam carrying pipes need to be insulated. The dry returns (return pipes above water line on the boiler) don't need to be insulated. However, if you plan on being there a long time it would probably be worth it to insulate the wet return piping/ This will keep the boiler water warmer for the next cycle. Hope this helps.

insulation on boiler pipes or no?

    Hello,
We have an old steam boiler/radiator system in our 1926 house; I recently noticed that some of the pipes under the house are insulated while others are not. Is it supposed to be that the pipes carrying steam to the radiators should be insulated while the return pipes are not? Or are ALL pipes having anything to do with the boiler supposed to be insulated?
Thanks so much for any help.
    Audrey
