Fellas:
I have learned a ton about steam heat and proper boiler installation from hanging around here.
A neighbor called me over, AFTER he had a new gravity, gas steam boiler installed.
It is rated for 760 sq ft, for a two floor house with 15 mixed type radiators.
The near boiler piping is copper. The Hartford loop does not have a short nipple. The front and rear insulated covers are missing. There is all kinds of CR#$% floating on the sight glass. The boiler was never skimmed. There is a bad smell. The steaming water level is bouncing so that the low water cutoff is triggered. Main steam pipes were left uninsulated, and the man said there was no need for it. And the installation left a number of leaking and hissing radiator valves!
And the installer said he had done 100's of boilers.
I asked the neighbor for an inventory of the radiator mesurements. I want to see how much the boiler may be oversized. The sad conclusion is that this family is having a difficult financial go at the moment.
Pardon my ranting.
I do thank you all for the education.

That's sad to hear
But often, Oh so true! Has your neighbor called the installer and explained the "issues" with the system? That would be the first thing I'd recommend. If installations in your area are subject to inspection, maybe you could get in touch with the powers that be and request that the inspector come and take a looksee. I know the state boiler inspectors around here will glady call a contractor up and "request" that they get back to the job and take care of the problems.
If you decide to help your friend out and run stuck, you know where to come for advice.0 -
