need more humidity in home

We have been fighting humidity also. I have the HVAC running constant fan with my whole house (by-pass) humidifier going gull time. I can only run about 35% without a little help from an old pot on the gas stove. Drop in a cinimon stick, a little salt, a couple cloves, even orange peel and/or a few drops of vanilla and you got yourself a very festive auxilliary humidifier.

    Not enough humidity in home

I have a 2 story home. The humidifor is a General. I can't get the humidity above 40 percent. There is a lot of static in my home, The furnace is 2 yrs old. I have had to wet towels and keep them in front of the registers to add more humidity. Any suggestions?

Helen, my first question would be, Why do you want over 40 % humidity? Humidity charts that I see typically show as follows:

outside temp. / inside humidity not over

    0-10 degrees / 30%,
    10-20 degrees / 35%,
    20-40 degrees / 40%

This should give you all the moisture needed, without risking problems with condensation on windows, etc.

    depends where you are...

we have Tremendous static problems in Alaska. if your house has an HRV you can crank it up abit it may have something to do with static charge in the ventilation system if it isnt common in your area to have dry air and static in winter.

in forced air systems the air filter needs to be changed from time to time and the ducts need to be cleaned as that also builds up some heavy static snap.

try operating the thermostat in the fan on position. This will allow the humidifier to operate when the call for humidity comes, not when the call for heat comes.

    humidity

i think you should be happy with 40%. Where are you located? You will experience condensation problems if you get higher. Do you notice any condensation on your windows now? If you run constant fan you will be introducing humidity all the time instead of only when the furnace runs.
40% is pretty high for the winter.
