Viessmann Strap on pipe sensor won't fit

I have a job where I just barely squezed in the 9-spot manifold, circ, mix valve, ball valves in its tight little spot.

Anyway, can I modify the rather large strap on sensor? It certainly will not fit (did this thing grow over the last few months?). I'm kinda sure I only need to get the thermistor (is that the correct term?) properly reading the temp in the supply some how some way.
