New boiler, new problems

New boiler replacing a 35 year old Mclain. They have about same Output 576. New boiler steams so fast I run out of water real fast. Then the thing goes through its routine of on and off, waiting for thr water to return. I takes about an hour before I can get this place warm. Dan, I have this place well vented thanks to you. This things runs only about 2 minutes and off again. The New Boiler is a Crown. I got the typical reply from someone who makes his living puting boilers and he says turn up the pressure. Dan, they are still out there. I run in ounces, less then a pound or maybe a little more, hard to tell with this thing.Got a meeting tomorrow about noon with new owner and the guy who put this thing in

Is this system a counterflow system or a downfeed system? Maybe you have wet returns and they are almost closed up with corrosion so that it takes longer for the condensate to return to the boiler. Maybe the old boiler had enough water in reserve so that didn't affect it.

If the near boiler piping is wrong or if the water quality is really bad the steam velocity could be too high and it could take water along with it (wet steam). The boiler manufacturer will specify how to run that pipe and with what minimum size pipe to use. You should at least use the largest pipe that will fit in the section casting and use two if they call for it. That makes a huge difference; I know from personal experience.

Take a sample of the boiler water and boil it on the stove. If it foams up than you have poor water quality. Use a PH test kit and test the PH. The manufacturer’s requirements will vary from 7.0-11.0. Last while the boiler is steaming close off the top and bottom knobs to the gauge glass and open the drain valve at the bottom of the gauge glass. Next open the top knob only and watch the gauge glass. If you see water coming over the top of the gauge glass while the boiler is steaming than you know the boiler water quality is bad and surging. If you see nothing but only hear steam hissing out than chances are the water quality is OK and the water isn’t getting too violent in that boiler.
